      <image:title>Storyslam 2021 Stories - Shepherd Ruthie King | Storyslam 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>Ruthie King is a shepherd and firefighter based out of Mendocino County. Headwaters, her grazing operation, consists of 80 sheep and two donkeys who produce meat, wool, and hides. The flock is more than just for production, they graze land throughout Mendocino for fire fuel reduction and soil fertility. Ruthie's operation is a part of a farming collective at Ridgewood Ranch called the New Agrarian Collective which she helped found, and is closely associated with the training program she helped to start in 2013, the School of Adaptive Agriculture. Ruthie works seasonally, shearing sheep for flocks around Northern California, harvesting her own animals for meat, working the lambing barns at UC Hopland, and fighting fires during the fire season.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rudy Jimenez is a third generation organic farmer and artist. Growing up in the Salinas Valley, Rudy was inspired by his parents, who had worked on conventional farms for 30 years. Rudy paired this wealth of experience with his entrepreneurship skills to found Green Thumb Organics Farms in 2015. A graduate of the Agriculture Land Base Association (ALBA), he now grows five acres of certified organic produce in San Juan Bautista. Green Thumb Organics currently serves farmers markets in San Francisco and Berkeley. In addition to farming, Rudy offers wellness and health educational workshops via Urban Arts Collaborative. Together, they serve local families and youth, including the formerly incarcerated and migrant community, to promote healthy eating habits, lift up food production and preparation as a form of artistic expression, develop entrepreneurial skills, and advocate for the community.</image:caption>

She created Urban Remedy as a natural evolution of her passion for health and healing and living a lifestyle with “food is healing” as her mantra. Growing up in the farm-to-table culture of Northern California, Neka was inspired by people who care about what they eat and who strive to eat for health as well as pleasure. In her private practice of over a decade, Neka combined acupuncture and Chinese medicine with cutting-edge nutrition and lifestyle modifications to heal, balance and create optimal health. Neka started leading wellness retreats with her patients and over and over again they described experiencing life-changing results after just a few days. Inspired by these transformations, Neka knew she had found her calling and in 2009, Urban Remedy was born.</image:caption>

<image:caption>LORRAINE WALKER Eatwell Farm Lorraine Walker is a native San Franciscan and a lover of food, sharing the world of local and seasonal eating with anyone who will listen. Her love of cooking started at the young age of 5 when she would sneak into the kitchen early in the morning to make breakfast. Within a few years, she was demanding to make dinners and hasn’t stopped since. Since the age of 23, Lorraine has worked in various aspects of the natural products industry, where she eventually met Nigel Walker, founder of Eatwell Farm. They married, and with Nigel's encouragement, she started her own side project producing lacto-fermented drinks called Drinkwell Softers. After losing her husband to cancer in July 2017, Lorraine became a reluctant farmer, taking over the helm at Eatwell Farm. Since then, Lorraine and her son Cameron have been on an intense crash course in farming and managing one of the Bay Area’s top CSA’s.</image:caption>

She is the Culinary Program Director at Sprouts Cooking Club where she is responsible for planning, coordinating, and even teaching culinary classes and camps. With a master's in sustainability, she is a strong advocate for local food economies. In the past few years, she also spent time working abroad to promote these topics by teaching environmental protection in Guatemala, as well as getting her hands dirty at farms and with a small composting company. Such experiences have all strengthened Andrea's passion for just food systems and cooking. Andrea strongly believes that by cultivating stronger relationships with our food and through stronger communities we can unite to alter the food system and bring about positive environmental and social change. From a young age, she recognized the importance of joy and nourishment to her own health and healing, and since then, has devoted her time in creating spaces for others and herself to embody joy and reconnect with themselves and each other within the world of food and dance. As a dancer, creative, and deep thinker, she believes life is made up of the texture (moments) in our daily lives and moves in a way for her life and her offerings to embody that.</image:caption>

They have experienced how growing and cooking around the world transforms lives and communities, and the way we treat each other. With proximity to others, we can understand and have compassion for their experience. As a chef, farmer, activist and educator Ave has worked for social justice in the food system teaching job skills to those on the streets and palate education to our youth. Jack strongly believes in working to make the world a better place. He currently manifests this value as Product Manager at the tech nonprofit Replate. Replate reduces food waste and food insecurity by picking up surplus food from businesses and delivering it straight to nonprofit organizations that feed people experiencing food insecurity. <image:caption>Conor Cusack (he/his) After leaving home and his mother’s bustling, pastry filled kitchen for college, Conor rediscovered the power of food and story first through food studies and then by starting a brunch pop-up to serve classmates and eventually complete strangers. After working in restaurants for several years following school, Conor transitioned into cooking for the Minnesota Central Kitchen project, a hunger relief effort started in response to the pandemic. Real Food Real Stories has reignited his passion for uniting story and cooking and continues to challenge and reshape his perspective on how the two intersect. He believes cooking is a powerful starting point for sparking an intimacy with our food and loved ones that can quickly extend to the land around us, its history, and the growers on which we depend. Conor is passionate about reconnecting people to land through reconnecting them with other actors in our food systems. He considers cooking and sharing food as a way to say “I see you. You are not forgotten. I am here for you,” and believes just food networks keep this value at the center of their work. Conor believes story can be found in the practice of butchery or foraging just as much as in the practice of gathering around a table or trying a new recipe with a friend. You can find him cracking open jars and sniffing his bubbling ferments, searching for obscure cookbooks in thrift stores, or maybe just waking up before the sun rises to bake his mother’s scones. As much as he dreams about those scones, the food memory that replays in his head often these days is tasting fresh, wild sumac for the first time after moving to Minnesota.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stephanie Lew Stephanie has discovering warmth and community through food. Growing up, she felt her environment was cold and lacking connection. In college, she came across a community centered around food and in that community she found that connection she was looking for. She now feels in deep connection with people, the land, and herself and is passionate about sharing this connection with others. Her involvement in the food system has included farming on a 400-acre organic vegetable and animal farm, co-founding a start-up to address food waste and food insecurity through the sale of ‘ugly produce’, writing soil science material for youth, and cooking, all of which have strengthened her connection to food. For Stephanie, food is the easiest and most human way to understand and build connection with the world around her. Recently, she has been exploring her identity and past experiences as a Chinese-American through food. Real Food Real Stories has helped her unearth her own personal food stories, a stepping stone to accessing more vulnerable parts of herself and being able to share that with others to build a regenerative and just food system.</image:caption>

After years honing her craft in kitchens on both sides of the pond, Sarah opened Miss Ollie's in 2012, a farm-to-table Afro Caribbean restaurant in Oakland, CA. Miss Ollie's was named a 'Top 100 Restaurant' and garnered regional and worldwide accolades in countless newspaper reviews, magazine profiles, television shows, and films. In 2020 the COVID pandemic devastated the hospitality industry and Miss Ollie's was not spared the consequences of forced closures and social distancing guidelines. In 2021 Miss Ollie's will transition to Sanctuary, a non-profit incubator for Black chefs, artists, musicians, and other creators</image:caption>

Together, they serve local families and youth, including the formerly incarcerated and migrant community, to promote healthy eating habits, lift up food production and preparation as a form of artistic expression, develop entrepreneurial skills, and advocate for the community</image:caption>
